CHAPTER EIGHT
At precisely the same moment that Titus Quayle was booking himself onto a noon Air Lingus flight to Dublin, Hugh Cockburn walked up the stairs into Milburn House and showed his identification to the porter at the desk.
âSir Martin is expecting you,â the porter said, his thumb jerking at the narrow dingy flight of stairs.
Moments later, Cockburn was ushered into Sir Martin Callowsâ office. The Deputy Director General sat behind his desk, one huge hand holding a golden pen and writing noiselessly on a white pad.
âTook your time getting here,â he muttered.
âIt was late when I got in,â Cockburn answered. âEveryone had gone home.â
Callows gave a porcine grunt and leant forward to speak into his intercom. âGet Burmeister in here,â he said, and his secretaryâs voice buzzed back with a metallic reply that neither man could understand. âYou been following the search for Quayle?â he asked, putting his pen down.
âIn so much as reading the station updates, yes I have.â
âHow much do you know about him? You worked together enough times?â
âEnough to know that you wonât find him and take him if he doesnât want to come.â
âYou rate him that highly?â
âHeâs good. As good as any man we ever fielded. But itâs not that I rate him so high, he couldnât be caught. Everyone can be found sooner or later.â He paused there for a second. âI just donât rate the people who are looking for him.â
Callows raised an eyebrow.
âAnd donât ask me to take on the job or assist,â Cockburn added. âIâm yet to be convinced that heâs done anything that warrants this kind of extreme action.â
âDonât take that tone of voice with me, lad!â Callows warned.
âWith due respect, Sir Martin, I have over twenty years in the service. My judgement is what Iâm paid for. My judgement and my experience. Within my service conditions there are riders that allow me to use that experience and refuse to become involved in any venture that I consider to be either foolhardy, ill-conceived, or lacking in any rational objective.â
âI know!â Callows interrupted. âI wrote them!â His head turned angrily as the door swung open and John Burmeister walked in. âYou two know each other I presume,â he muttered. âJohn has been running the file since the attack on Adrian Black. He can bring you up to date.â
âWhy am I here?â Cockburn asked. âIf itâs to help find...â
âRelax,â Callows said, raising a hand and his eyes to the ceiling. âYou arenât going to be asked to help take him out. To the contrary in factâ¦â
âWe need your help, Cockburn,â Burmeister spoke for the first time.
Cockburn looked at them both, the realisation dawning. âMy God! You want me to run him! After all youâve put him through, you want me to try to bring him on service againâ¦â
âNot try. Succeed,â Callows replied harshly. âHeâs the only one who knew enough about Morton, the man who wrote the files.â
âWhat do you think?â Burmeister asked, leaning forward.
Cockburn just shook his head slowly, as if unable to believe them.
